Thursday June 26th to Sunday June 29th 2008

This is claimed to be "the largest free folk festival in the county", with hundreds of performers and thousands of spectators. Musicians and dancers entertain the crowds with events ranging from traditional and contemporary folk music, through to blues; plus Celtic, English and Scottish dance groups, country dancing, morris sides, African dancers, international folk dance, jive and line-dancing.

The Thamesgate Traditional Arts Association

Promoting and encouraging interest, education and participation in

all forms of traditional folk art, in Southern Essex.

 

The Yardarm Session has been held at the Leigh on Sea Sailing Club, 8 pm every second Monday of the month since January 2007. This Session involves the playing of traditional folk music and song, but with some storytelling and poetry. Website for the Yardarm Session is www.yardarm.btik.com All welcome - up to 45 people have been attending each event. The premises has a licensed bar. Donation only £1.
 

The Thamesgate Traditional Arts Association, launched on 12th November 2007, has arisen from that Session and will continue to present it. The TTAA website is www.thettaa.btik.com The association is concerned with ALL types of traditional folk arts and the following is a shortened version of the main aims:
 

  • promote the activities of traditional arts in Southern Essex;
  • encourage public interest in folk arts and traditions;
  • facilitate education in the traditional arts for all members of the community;
  • arrange and provide for …. the holding of exhibitions, meetings, lectures, classes, seminars and training courses;
  • investigate means of developing interest and participation and knowledge of the Association;
  • foster links with, support and co-operate with other persons and organizations with similar aims.

New members, of all ages and levels of talent, are welcome

and the annual membership fee is only £1.
