Fishing Festival

During the Annual Fishing Festival visitors have the chance to see working fishing boats, which are moored from the wharves. These boats illustrate the different types of vessel used for fishing for flatfish and shellfish.  During the recent Festival on Sunday 23rd August 2009 one boat landed a catch during the festival, and a ‘Sail Past’ of Old Leigh boats, including the Endeavour, which has recently been restored, took place.

Other organisations took part in the event providing leaflets and information, and helping residents and visitors understand the marine environment in which Leigh exists and the problems faced by commercial fishermen and associated activities.

There was also ample opportunity to taste locally caught cockles, and to buy fresh local fish from the Leigh Fishermen’s Co-op and Essex grown oysters from the West Mersey Oyster Company.
